in firebird 1.0 you can group by UDF.

For example, you can use DateToStr function of rfunc UDF library (
http://polesoft.da.ru ,
http://polesoft.narod.ru/files/rfunc2.zip ,
http://polesoft.narod.ru/files/rfunc2.tar.gz )
to extract month and year using format string like
DateToStr(mytimestamp,'%Y')
or
DateToStr(mytimestamp,'%m')
